Free California apprentice kit

Walk onto your first 30 days more jobsite-ready.

A practical readiness kit for new California plumbing apprentices: safety, core tools, jobsite expectations, and the right questions to bring to your lead.

Pipewise complements formal apprenticeship and supervised field training. It is not a replacement for either.

Use this before day one

The readiness routine that makes a better first impression.

This is not a list to memorize and forget. Bring it to the truck, the jobsite, and your first conversations with a qualified lead.

California code-learning note: This kit helps you study jobsite concepts. It is not legal advice, code authority, installation direction, or state-approved continuing education. Verify current code, local amendments, permits, and employer procedures before acting.

Checklist 01

First-day safety & PPE

  • Check the task, work area, and people nearby before you begin.
  • Confirm task-appropriate PPE with your lead and employer procedures.
  • Keep walking paths clear of cords, tools, materials, and water.
  • Pause and ask when you see an unfamiliar condition or the plan changes.
  • Protect the customer’s space and leave the work area orderly.

Checklist 02

Essential tool readiness

  • Bring a tape measure, torpedo level, utility knife, and pencil or marker.
  • Inspect hand tools before use; do not improvise with damaged or unfamiliar tools.
  • Use the correct wrench or pliers for the fitting—ask before applying force.
  • Measure from a confirmed reference point and recheck before marking or cutting.
  • Deburr and clean material as directed before a connection is made.
